The Alfond Inn, in Winter Park, Florida, will open its doors for guests in August 2013. The new boutique hotel is designed specifically for the affluent Winter Park community and aimed at leisure travelers, weddings and meetings.

The New York Times recently called Winter Park “a sophisticated alternative to Disney.” With its design-centric shops and pedestrian-friendly tree-lined streets, Winter Park exudes the feeling of an intimate European-style village. Developed in the 19th century, Winter Park is known for its bountiful Saturday Farmers market and for The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, which has the world’s largest collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

The Alfond Inn is poised to become the new hub of dynamic Winter Park. The Alfond Inn is 15 minutes from downtown Orlando and 30 minutes from Walt Disney World and Orlando International Airport.

Room with a purpose

Owned by Rollins College, a private coeducational liberal arts college in Winter Park, The Alfond Inn is being built with a $12.5-million grant from the Harold Alfond Foundation.

The Alfond Inn also has an unusual philanthropic and sustainable business model: net operating income from the Inn will endow The Alfond Scholars program. This is Rollins College’s premier scholarship fund, and it offers full scholarships and provides additional financial aid to deserving students. Income will be directed to the fund over the next 25 years or until the endowment principal reaches $50 million, whichever comes later.

The Alfond Inn has created one of the most beautiful and welcoming backdrops for weddings and social affairs in Central Florida, starting with the glass-domed Conservatory, the heart of the Inn and the ideal location for ceremonies, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Outside is 10,000 square feet of lushly landscaped space in the garden, perfect for alfresco weddings and events. Inside The Alfond inn, the elegant 5,000 square foot BallroomJ will be able to accommodate up to 350 guests for a plated dinner. Because the spaces are divisible, serving as an intimate wedding venue as well as smaller social events can be easily handled.

Corporate Meeting Space

There is an additional 10,000 square feet of dedicated meeting space in The Alfond Inn that can be divided as needed for break-out rooms and to accommodate smaller conferences and meetings. That includes a 1,000 square foot Board Room with state-of-the-art AV equipment and board-style seating, a room that can also function as a private dining room for intimate dinners.

Built into the concept of our Winter Park hotel, The Alfond Inn, is a commitment to the arts.  We’ve incorporated this commitment into our logo with the statement The Alfond Inn, A Work Of Heart”.  Our love for the arts will be permanently on display throughout the Inn with a rotating exhibition from the collection of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum.

The collection has been developed, and continues to grow, as a gift to the students, prospective students, community members, individuals and families who visit the Rollins College campus. Barbara and Ted Alfond ’68, with the assistance of independent curator Abigail Ross Goodman, have formed this collection specifically for Rollins as an affirmation of the benefits and rewards of a liberal arts education, which encourages critical thinking, the exploration of one’s personal values, the appreciation of cultures around the world, and above all, the possible pathways towards love, understanding, and change for good.

Chef Christopher Windus has joined The Alfond Inn

Chef Christopher Windus has joined The Alfond Inn team and is the former executive chef of Todd English’s bluezoo at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel. He led his culinary team at English’s only venture in Orlando serving “coastal cuisine”.  Windus joined bluezoo in 2003 as assistant chef.

Under Windus’ leadership, the restaurant solidified its reputation as one of the top dining experiences in Orlando annually by earning the AAA Four Diamond designation as well as other accolades including Fodor’s Choice Award and the Culinary Hospitality Santé Award for Innovation. 


Windus’ ability to create a global cuisine with a modern influence, has earned him recognition from both English and Starwood Hotel & Resorts, the operating company of the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel.  In 2009, English named Windus as his co-captain for Israel’s cooking competition show, Krav Sakinim, where they claimed the Grand Champion title.  In 2012, Windus was selected to be part of the exclusive opening team for the new-concept restaurant Chefs Club by Food and Wine Magazine at Starwood’s St. Regis Aspen.   


He has showcased his expertise at some of the most elite events and venues in the culinary world, including the Sundance Film Festival, the Aspen Food and Wine Festival, the American Express Black Card Dinner in Bogota, Columbia, Disney’s Epcot Food & Wine Festival, and multiple times at the James Beard House in New York City.  Stages at McCrady’s in Charlestown, S.C. and Michelin Star Rated Aldea in NYC have prepared Windus well for The Alfond Inn’s southern inspired concept, Hamilton’s Kitchen.


Windus has long been an advocate of the use of local and seasonal ingredients in the construction of his menus, continually altering his menus to incorporate the freshest of these items.


Starting out as a dishwasher while in Forestry school at Northern Arizona University, Windus developed a love of cooking that led him to a certificate of food and beverage in hospitality management from Cornell University and an associate degree in culinary arts from the Capital Culinary Institute. 


Before joining the culinary team at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin, Windus worked as the sous chef at Chez Vincent, a French restaurant in Winter Park, Fla., where he assisted the executive chef Vincent Gagliano in managing the day-to-day operations of the restaurant.  Windus considers it a blessing to come back to his roots here in Winter Park and provide a unique dining experience for the community that he loves.
